There are two options for an external hard drive, 2.5" and 3.5". 3.5" are essentially the desktop hdds enclosed in a casing, they typically have 7200 rpm speed, while 2.5" are laptop hdds and typically have 5400 rpm speeds.
The advantage of going for 2.5" hdd is they are usb powered so you dont need an external power cable to use them. Also it makes them ideal to use along with a laptop on the go.

Apart from this one can also get a decent hdd case like transcend and get an hdd of your choice installed in it.
